One of our primary responsibilities as Christians is to be witnesses for Jesus. After Christ’s resurrection, He charged His disciples with the Great Commission: “Go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15, NKJV). Just before He ascended to Heaven, Jesus promised His disciples, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me” (Acts 1:8). The Lord sent His Holy Spirit for the very purpose of giving us the power to be witnesses!

Perhaps one of the greatest ways to witness is through love. After all, “God is love,” (1 John 4:8) so when we show love to others, we show them God.  Jesus expressed to His disciples, “As I have loved you … also love one another. By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:34-35).  In other words, He taught them, “Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples” (John 13:35, NLT).  Displaying genuine love for others makes you an effective witness for God.

But how can we develop the love of Christ in us when we are, by human nature, selfish and self-centered?  The apostle Paul explained, “God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us” (Rom. 5:5, NIV).  You see, God’s love is not something we work up within ourselves, but it is a fruit of the Spirit which God develops in us.  The more we give ourselves to God, the more He pours His love into our hearts.

Let’s again consider what it really means to be a witness.  By definition, a witness is one who holds specific information or knowledge on an event, topic, or person.  You cannot truly be a witness for something or someone you do not know well.  Therefore, truly knowing the Lord in a close, personal way will allow you to be a more effective witness.

You see, while we are called to be witnesses, we must not forget the first calling of the Lord on our lives.  Paul wrote, “God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Cor. 1:9, NKJV).  Our most important calling is to conduct fellowship with Jesus Christ so that we know Him well; that was the very reason we were created.

We cannot express the fullness of God’s love if we do not know Him. First John 4:7 explains, “Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” The more we fellowship with the Lord, the more we become like Him, and the more His love fills our hearts. If we truly know God, His love will be evident in our lives, making us effective witnesses.

As you can see, the foundation of an effective witness for Christ is intimate communion with the Lord. You can enjoy that fellowship through prayer, worship, and meditating on Bible scriptures. In those times of devotion, you will come to know God better as He imparts His nature and character to you. Eventually, you will reach a point that you just cannot hide the glory of the Lord that shines within and through you. As you share that glory with the world around you, you will become the strong witness God has called you to be!  Let His love shine through you today.
