“Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has dealt bountifully with you.” –Psalm 116:7
Sometimes your soul – your mind, will, and emotions – can get off course. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take much to get us flustered, upset, or stressed at times.
When the psalmist wrote these words, he must have recognized his own human nature and realized his soul was off track. Maybe he was worried about his needs, feeling overwhelmed, or having a pity party. But he took the initiative to speak to his own soul and tell it to return to a state of rest. He reminded himself that God had blessed him tremendously and there was no need to be upset.
We can do the same. I know when I start to feel overwhelmed or over-stressed, one of the greatest cures for me is to start counting my blessings. It helps me to put things in the right perspective and reminds me of God’s faithfulness.
The next time you start to feel worried, angry, or upset, I encourage you to stop and remind yourself that God has been good to you. Talk to yourself! Count your blessings and tell your soul to return to its rest. Surely, the Lord has dealt bountifully with us!
