When the calendar flips to January, it seems we are exposed to all things new: a new year, new diets, new TV shows, new fashions, and even some new laws.  In all of the “newness” of the season, have you stopped to think about what is new in your relationship with the Lord?

In Psalm 96:1, the writer encourages us to “sing to the Lord a new song.”  Why do you think the psalmist felt we should sing a new song to God?  He probably understood that when we serve God, we always have new reasons to praise Him!  No matter how long you follow the Lord, He continues to reveal Himself in new ways and remains faithful in every new situation.  Lamentations 3:22-23 acknowledges, “His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” You may not be a songwriter who creates new melodies, but you can praise God with fresh enthusiasm for the latest ways He has shown Himself faithful to you.  That’s what it means to sing a new song to the Lord.

I’m thankful to say that I’ve been a Christian for over 25 years.  However, the song of praise I’m singing today is not the same one I sang 25 years ago.  God has shown Himself faithful in so many new ways through the years that I have a new song to sing today.  That song is not the same one I sang fifteen years ago, ten years ago, or five years ago.  It’s not the same one I sang last year, last month, or last week.  It’s not even the same song I sang yesterday!  God has shown Himself faithful in new ways today, and I have a new song to sing!

I know you can say the same.  We can all proclaim like David: “Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits” (Psalm 68:19).  As we experience those benefits, it’s important that we don’t just think about how grateful we are, but that we tell God how thankful we are!  David said, “He has put a new song in my mouth – Praise to our God” (Psalm 40:3).  Notice that he said the new song was in his mouth, not just in his head or his heart.  So, let God hear the new song of praise from your mouth.

When we hear a great new song, we usually can’t wait to hear it again.  We may even purchase a CD or download a file just so we can listen to that one new song over and over.  I think God is the same way.  He wants to hear your new song, and He loves to hear it again and again and again!  So, take a moment to think about the goodness of God in your life, and then sing a new song to the Lord today!
